February 5, 2010

Dear Parents,

We’ve had a great Catholic Schools’ Week!  I would like to sincerely thank Tammy Krieger and Lisa Crowley as chairs of the week and their crew of parents that helped with so many aspects of the week, making it special for us all!  This thank you includes all the people responsible for prepping the blanket materials for the student service project, the parents that drove students to bowling and the sporting events, especially all those that helped with food prep for the Bishop’s visit as well as the cookies/hot cocoa for the students and more!

The Bishop and our Superintendent of Schools really enjoyed their visit with us and they reminded me that it was exactly three years ago the school was announced. During their visit they saw all aspects of a typical school day, beginning with mass and the sharing of our honor roll certificates. During their visit they saw student learning and engaged in conversation with the students about life at St. Brigid School. They even stayed awhile to watch the 8th graders vs. staff and the fun in what has become an annual volleyball game. (for all those wondering the record remains 8th graders 1 game and teachers 1 game!)

The funniest moment of the visit was in pre-k when the Bishop asked the students what they were learning in school and they told him all about the solar system. He asked them what planet they’ve been to and they told him, “Not mars because aliens live on mars.”  Then as quick and precious as only a pre-k student could deliver, one of the children told him he looked like an alien too! We all laughed and the bishop was totally charmed in an instant! He consequently told every other class that visiting the schools was the happiest part of his work and we do believe it.

This coming week we must get back to mid-winter school business in academics and all our other work after the fun of Catholic Schools Week. Our winter weeks are moving along at a fast pace and we are heading for the February break. Please remember this Friday there is an early release day and there will be no after-school care available. The break will conclude on the 21st.  Ash Wednesday does fall during the break this year and so as a school we will mark the beginning of Lent once we return from the winter vacation.

The break is meant for rest, fun and re-charging student and family batteries! Wednesday, the priests did come to school and blessed our throats on the Feast of St. Blaise so we look forward to a healthy end of winter and the hope of a healthy spring! St. Blaise, was known to have saved a young boy from choking on a fish bone so he is a special patron of all infirmities of the throat and other such mid-winter viruses!

We appreciate your quick return of the registration intention forms last week. We’ve heard from nearly everyone! If you have forgotten your form please send it in as soon as possible. We are working on developing a sound working-budget for next year and understanding your intentions helps us to plan appropriately. As a school we have great ideas; which we must keep in balance with the cost of staff and benefits plus the cost of supplies, materials and upkeep of the facilities. Knowing your family intentions help us as we work to determine the cost of tuition for next year.

Have a Great Weekend!

Peace and All Good Things!

Ms. Lee
